Stevenson vs Jack: Tony Bellew backs Badou Jack to finally topple WBC champion Adonis Stevenson

Badou Jack will ‘feel the power’ of Adonis Stevenson, but can finally end the WBC light-heavyweight champion’s five-year reign, says Tony Bellew.

Heavy-handed Stevenson will make the ninth defence of his WBC title against Jack in Toronto, this Sunday morning live on Sky Sports.

Since drawing against James DeGale in an epic unification clash last year, the Swedish-born star has since moved up to the 175lbs division and defeated another Brit in Nathan Cleverly to claim a WBA belt – which he later vacated following the confirmation of a fight against Stevenson.

And Bellew believes Jack needs to execute the perfect strategy to dethrone his former opponent Stevenson after he fell short in a stoppage loss to ‘Superman’ on a 2013 trip to Canada.

Bellew told Sky Sports: “He [Stevenson] doesn’t like being tested. He likes to dictate the range, the pace of a fight, but he isn’t very good on the back foot up against the ropes.

“Jack has to to be the one in charge and make it a close fight, mix it up, and get messy but also box.

“He can’t allow himself to get a taste of Stevenson’s power and then show him too much respect, because he is going to feel the power.

“Jack has to press the fight in the right way, get up close and make the age show by forcing Stevenson to fight when he doesn’t want to fight, and box when he doesn’t want to box.”

Despite throwing his support behind the Las Vegas-based fighter, the ‘Bomber’ has warned the 34-year-old to be wary of the early threat that will be posed by Stevenson.

Bellew added: “I hope Jack does it. I’m a little worried because Stevenson is such a dangerous puncher, but if he comes through the first four rounds then he wins this fight.

Johnny Nelson is joined by Joshua Buatsi to reflect on his career so far and preview Adonis Stevenson vs Badou Jack.

“Stevenson’s a very big puncher and is a good finisher. If he lands a shot, then he normally gets rid of them. His left hand is a dangerous weapon.

“It’s a fascinating fight, Adonis isn’t getting any younger, and he’s seen his best physical years behind him. He keeps getting his wins against absolutely nobodies.”

Already this year has been an explosive one for boxing fans and that should continue this weekend when Adonis Stevenson faces Badou Jack, live on Sky Sports.

Watch Adonis Stevenson’s WBC title defence against Badou Jack in Toronto on Sunday May 19, from 2,30am, live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action.
