McIlroy previously called the Ryder Cup a “showcase event” but has since made it one of the biggest events on his calendar, with the Northern Irishman's first three appearances ending in European victories.
He scored a key singles victory at the 2012 Miracle at Medinah – despite narrowly missing the tee time – and has been at every tournament since, with McIlroy reduced to tears after taking his point on the final day of a crushing defeat in 2021.
McIlroy's performance in Rome was the best of his Ryder Cup career to date, with four points from five matches, and his only loss coming in a heated four-ball match on Saturday that included a parking lot altercation with Patrick Cantlay's caddie, Joe La Cava.
Rory McIlroy reflected on Team Europe's path to winning the 2023 Ryder Cup and how much the victory would mean to him.
How they qualified: McIlroy began his qualifying campaign with three top-three finishes in four DP World Tour events, then won the season-ending DP World Tour Championship and his sixth Race to Dubai victory.
He opened the 2025 PGA Tour season by winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players, and completed his career Grand Slam a month earlier to claim his fifth world title by winning The Masters. McIlroy's qualification was confirmed by a top-20 finish at the U.S. Open in June.
Watch the highlights of Rory McIlroy's incredible round as he won the Masters in a playoff against Justin Rose to complete his career Grand Slam.
Robert MacIntyre (Scotland)
Age: 29
Ryder Cup appearances: one (2023)
Ryder Cup record: 2.5 points in three matches (two wins, zero losses, one draw)

MacIntyre made a brilliant debut for Team Europe in Rome, going unbeaten – one of four newcomers – and earning two and a half points in three games.
He partnered Rose in both four-ball sessions and the pair earned Europe's only full point in Saturday's afternoon session before holding on to defeat Wyndham Clarke to finish last in the singles.
Team Europe celebrated their victory over the USA in the Ryder Cup in Rome right on the team bus.
How They Qualified: MacIntyre had another solid season on the PGA Tour, finishing second twice — among seven players in the top 10 — to help him crack the world's top 10 for the first time.
The Scot finished runner-up to JJ Spawn at the US Open and tied for seventh at the US Open the following month before automatically qualifying by finishing runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at the BMW Championship.
Highlights from the final round of the US Open at Oakmont Country Club, where JJ Spawn won his first Grand Slam title.
Tommy Fleetwood (England)
Age: 34
Ryder Cup appearances: three (2018, 2021, 2023)
Ryder Cup record: eight points in 12 matches (seven wins, three losses and two ties)

Fleetwood made history on his 2018 debut when he and Francesco Molinari became the first European pair to win all four sessions together, although a recent week at Whistling Straits saw him pick up just half a point from three matches.
He won both his foursome matches with Rory McIlroy in the last Ryder Cup and then secured the winning point for Team Europe by beating Rickie Fowler 3&1 in the singles on Sunday.
Tommy Fleetwood's brilliant performance saw him beat Rickie Fowler 3-1 to secure the point that ensured Europe would return to the Ryder Cup in Rome.
How they qualified: Fleetwood had already secured a place in Ryder Cup qualifying before claiming his long-awaited first PGA Tour victory at the season-ending Tour Championship following an impressive Ryder Cup qualifying campaign.
At the end of the 2024 DP World Tour season, he had four top-12 finishes and several PGA Tour appearances, falling just short of victories at the Travelers Championship and FedEx St Jude Championship before his FedExCup success.
Highlights from the final round of the season-ending PGA Tour Championship as Tommy Fleetwood captured the FedExCup title
Justin Rose (England)
Age: 45
Ryder Cup appearances: six (2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2023)

Rose won three on debut during a losing 2008 match and formed an unbeaten foursome with Ian Poulter in the 2012 event, where he pulled out a dramatic last-hole victory over Phil Mickelson in singles to help Europe to a landmark victory.
He was unbeaten in five sessions of Europe's 2014 Ryder Cup triumph and scored two points in each of the subsequent two Ryder Cups before being dropped from Padraig Harrington's team in a record defeat at Whistling Straits in 2021.
Sky Sports' Craig Slater caught up with Justin Rose at the Dutch Grand Prix where they discussed his Ryder Cup qualification and Team Europe's hopes.
Rose returned to Rome and proved a valuable partner for MacIntyre, where they picked up 1.5 points to give Europe a comfortable lead heading into the final round. The veteran is one of only two players to win the Ryder Cup on the road.
How they qualified: Rose secured his spot by defeating Spawn in a playoff to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship last month, his 12th PGA Tour title and first since February 2023.
Highlights from Day 4 of the FedEx St Jude Championship, where Justin Rose took an impressive victory
The former world number one also narrowly lost to McIlroy in a playoff at the Masters and finished sixth at the Genesis Scottish Open in July, while Rose has had two more top eight finishes at PGA Tour Signature Events during her impressive campaign.
Rasmus Hoygaard (Denmark)
Age: 24
Ryder Cup Participation: Newcomer

How they qualified: The win over McIlroy at the 2024 Amgen Irish Open puts Hoegaard among the top 10 finishes in the world in qualifying, including a second-place finish at the DP World Tour Championship.
The five-time DP World Tour winner also finished runner-up at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans and the Danish Golf Championship before cementing his place with a shared 13th place in the final qualifier for the Betfred British Masters.
Highlights from the final day of the 2024 Amgen Irish Open as Rasmus Hojgaard denied Rory McIlroy victory on home soil in Northern Ireland.
Tyrrell Hutton (England)
Age: 33 years
Ryder Cup appearances: three (2018, 2021, 2023)
Ryder Cup record: six points in 11 matches (five wins, four losses and two draws)

Hatton played a key role in Team Europe's success at the 2023 World Cup in Rome, partnering Ram in both sessions of the four-a-side tournament and finishing the tournament unbeaten with 3.5 points from four matches.
The Englishman ended the week by beating Brian Harman in singles, having lost on the final day of his two previous Ryder Cup appearances; Hatton was also part of the European team in 2018 and 2021.
Tyrrell Hatton beat Brian Harman 3-2 to put Europe within half a point of reclaiming the Ryder Cup.
How they qualified: Hatton was given an automatic spot despite LIV Golf League events not awarding qualifying points. The Englishman has won two DP World Tour titles in the past year.
Victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last October and success at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January followed two more top-six finishes on the DP World Tour, while Hatton also finished fourth at this summer's US Open.
Shane Lowry (Ireland)
Age: 38
Ryder Cup appearances: two (2021, 2023)
Ryder Cup record: 2.5 points in six matches (two wins, three losses and one draw)

Lowry earned his first Ryder Cup point alongside Hatton in Saturday's four-balls of the 2021 event, where they snatched victory on the final hole to close Europe's gap on the final day.
He partnered with Straka in the foursome in Rome, winning one and losing one, before tying Jordan Spieth in singles. Lowry partnered with McIlroy in the Ryder Cup and won the PGA Tour event at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans last year.
Shane Lowry was one of the stars of Sunday's 2023 singles as Team Europe defeated Team USA to win the Ryder Cup.
What helped him get into the field: Lowry had a solid start to the qualifying campaign, finishing no lower than 13th in the last six events of the DP World Tour season, then finishing second to McIlroy at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
The Irishman has six top-20 finishes in seven PGA Tour events, including a runner-up finish to Straka at the Truist Championship after losing his lead on the final holes. Lowry fell just short of an automatic top-six finish after falling out of the top six in the final week of qualifying.
What they said: “Honestly, I feel like I wake up every morning and I'm always aiming for the Ryder Cup, whatever it is. I've been working hard towards it this year. I feel like it's been at the forefront of my mind for a while now, and I'm really excited about it.”
Shane Lowry reacts to being given first choice of Ryder Cup captain by Luke Donald, who will play for Team Europe in New York
Jon Rahm (Spain)
Age: 30
Ryder Cup appearances: three (2018, 2021, 2023)
Ryder Cup record: 7.5 points in 12 matches (six wins, three losses, three ties)

Rahm scored his first Ryder Cup point by beating Tiger Woods in the Sunday singles during Europe's 2018 success, and the Spaniard then finished as Europe's top scorer at Whistling Straits with 3.5 of nine points.
He then went unbeaten in four matches during Europe's triumph in Rome, setting his 100 per cent record in fours, with Rahm leading the singles against world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
Jon Rahm secured a potentially vital half-point for Team Europe with a remarkable putt on the 18th hole in his singles match against Scottie Scheffler.
What helped him make the list: Rahm began his qualifying campaign with a second-place finish on home soil at the Spanish Open last October and two more top-seven finishes at DP World Tour events.
In 2025, the Spaniard finished in the top 15 of major tournaments three times, and his consistent play in the LIV Golf League allowed him to lead the individual standings for the second season in a row.
Jon Rahm reacts to Luke Donald naming him as a contender for the Ryder Cup in New York
What they said: “I I didn't think I would be so excited to be chosen. It's going to be something special and I'm looking forward to performing in Bethpage.”

Ryder Cup appearances: one (2023)

Ryder Cup record: one point in three matches (one win, two losses)
Straka was chosen as the team's captain in Rome two years ago, where he partnered Shane Lowry in both sessions of the quadruple games and helped Europe to a comprehensive victory in the first leg.
Sepp Straka holed out to complete a 2-1 win over Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa in the Rome Open.
The pair suffered a loss the following day, with Straka also losing in singles, where he had put Justin Thomas down on the last hole. Straka thus became the first Austrian player to play in multiple Ryder Cups for Team Europe.
What helped him get selected: Straka is a two-time winner of the 2025 PGA Tour, following his double victory at The American Express in January and also his victory at the Truist Championship — his fourth PGA Tour title in as many years — in May.
Highlights from the final round of the Truist Championship in Pennsylvania, where Sepp Straka took the win for his second of the season.
The Austrian has four more top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season, including a third-place finish at The Memorial and a fifth-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, although he has failed to qualify for three of the four Grand Slam events.
What they said: “You'd think winning the Ryder Cup would just be a bucket list thing. But no, it just makes you want to be there even more next time and it's really rewarding to be a part of this team.”
Victor Hovland (Norway)
Age: 27 (28 before Ryder Cup)
Ryder Cup appearances: two (2021, 2023)

Ryder Cup record: 4.5 points in 10 matches (three wins, four losses and three ties)
Hovland failed to score a single full point despite playing every session in a record European Ryder Cup defeat in 2021, where he drew two matches and lost three of five.
The Norwegian enjoyed even greater success two years later, a month after winning the FedExCup, when his pairing with Oberg earned two points and became the biggest win in Ryder Cup history. They are expected to pair up again in New York.
Viktor Hovland won his first singles point on Sunday with a 4-3 win over Collin Morikawa in Rome.
What helped him get selected: A win at the Valspar Championship in March snapped a streak of four missed cuts in five starts for Hovland, after which he failed to add another top-10 finish until a third-place finish at the U.S. Open in June.
Hovland missed out on The Open and finished seventh at the BMW Championship, the PGA Tour's final qualifying event, though he still finished 10th in the Ryder Cup standings.

Ludwig Oberg (Sweden)
Age: 25

Oberg had been a professional for less than four months when he was given the captain's pick for Team Rome, where he and Hovland won two four-a-side games during a record-breaking start to the European Championship.
The same pair suffered defeats in Saturday's four-ball to Sam Burns and Colin Morikawa before an eventful debut to five-time Grand Slam champion Brooks Koepka in singles.
What helped him make the team: The Swede won the early-season PGA Tour event at the Genesis Invitational and also impressed at the Masters, finishing tied for seventh, though he failed to qualify for the next two Grand Slams.
Highlights from the final round of the Genesis Invitational, where Ludwig Oberg took an impressive victory
Oberg has hit form over the summer, with three top-nine finishes in his last four qualifying events, and the Swede's tee shots are considered among the best on the PGA Tour and a common asset on long courses like Bethpage Black.
What they said: “I definitely feel more experienced this time. My professional career was still very short last time and I felt like I had the most amazing week in Rome. I was very proud to be part of this team and knew I wanted to be there in the future.”
Matt Fitzpatrick (England)
Age: 31 years
Ryder Cup appearances: three (2016, 2018, 2023)

Ryder Cup record: one point in eight matches (one win, seven losses)
Fitzpatrick has lost all five matches in his previous two Ryder Cup road appearances, having been part of losing teams in 2016 and 2021, although he did share a points victory with McIlroy on the opening day of the tournament in Rome.
The following day, the same pair suffered a dramatic final-hole decider where the US players' celebrations sparked heated debate, while Fitzpatrick's final-hole loss to Max Homa in the singles did not prevent Europe from lifting the trophy.
What helped him make the list: The former U.S. Open champion fell outside the top 80 after a poor start to the season, finishing eighth at the PGA Championship in May to become world No. 1 for the first time in 11 months and marking the start of an upturn in his form.
Audi Performance Zone looks at what led to Matt Fitzpatrick's significant improvement in results after the US Open.
Fitzpatrick's summer resurgence has seen him finish in the top eight five times in seven international starts, including fourth-place finishes at the Scottish Open and The Open, which helped him secure a tie for 11th in the Ryder Cup qualifying standings.
What they said: “I felt like I had changed my game from the start of the season, and to finish this Ryder Cup run in the form that I've been showing is definitely a really good feeling. It would certainly be great to continue that in Bethpage.”
