Ryan Reynolds: We weren't kidding when we said we'd make history at Wrexham

Ryan Reynolds has said Wrexham are part of history despite sceptics suggesting he and his ownership partner Rob McElhenney are either joking or out of their minds to believe their Premier League dreams can come true.

The Welsh club secured promotion to the Championship on Saturday, securing a third successive promotion and moving them one step closer to the Premier League.

Hollywood stars McElhenney and Reynolds watched from the stands as Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 at home in Sky Bet League One at the SToK Stadium.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, the 48-year-old actor wrote: “It feels like Wrexham and I have only been together for a moment, but so much has happened in that time.”

“I remember our first press conference when we were asked about our targets… and I think Rob immediately said: 'Premier League'.

“People laughed. They had every reason to. It seemed crazy… But we don't joke.”

The Deadpool actor added that he felt “at home” there, viewing Wrexham as “a place that values community, honesty and history”.

He expressed his “respect” for the 1934 colliery tragedy, the Gresford colliery disaster and the “sense of hope and miracles created” by former Wrexham and Manchester United footballer Mickey Thomas, who was also at the match on Saturday.

Reynolds claims Wrexham have “made history” with their third promotion, adding that “it was down to the wisdom of (manager) Phil Parkinson and his coaching staff and the talent” of the squad.

He noted that he “watched Sam Smith produce a terrifying combination of football and martial arts to score our second goal” after midfielder Oliver Rathbone opened the scoring with the opener.
