A tribute to five-time world champion Eric Bristow, who died last week
What memorable match did you like?
Wayne Mardle: Rob Cross V Daryl gurney were great. Gurney was a lot of pressure on him in Belfast, with family there. He lost a couple of early toe and he could get very complicated, very quickly. But he found in himself to carry. Full credit. It was a brilliant match at a brilliant pace.
Rod Studd: it was amazing when Michael van Gerwen played Gary Anderson. They are both an average of 110, mvg missed nine Darts, Anderson came out with a 110 – foot was the highlight of the competition.
Who is your surprise?
Rod Harrington: Michael Smith and Simon Whitlock, no damage to them, should not put so much on the back foot.
Smith has matured. He was always a player with as much talent as anyone else in the game, but he was looking up, pour it into Darts, and they went on. He thought he should win. Sometimes, you have to get down and dirty, but he didn’t know how.
This year he looks like he’s learned to get an extra five percent out of myself. With victory comes confidence, with confidence comes more winning.
John part: the Smith, but he didn’t play as well as he can. This is a good sign. I expect that it well this week against the cross. It’s nice when you win, but the form is still not at its peak. This is what he can draw. He still has another gear to hit, which will help him to withstand the surge [the other players].
Rod Studd: Smith was the outstanding player, whitewash, van Barneveld was exceptional. People don’t expect much from Smith, after he won only once-in his first season in the Premier League. He only lost two games (mvg and the cross, which, perhaps, the two best players in the world).
Wayne Mardle: Smith, obviously. Fourteen points, play well and look the real deal. Some people are waiting for him to falter, but I don’t think he will. He’s not a guaranteed exit in the playoffs, but he’s only one win from strengthening. He believes he can win it – he didn’t believe in the beginning, so his attitude changed.
I was not surprised, as Suljovic was acting, he was great. He averaged 99 over the two games, but was excluded is sickening.
Who are not reachable?
Rod Harrington: no one expected that Wright is fighting to survive elimination. And if Gary Anderson didn’t hit a draw with 6-2 or 6-3 down, he could be in this mix.
When a player Darts or Golf is at the top of your game, you can use either a dart or a club, whatever. But when you fight, when Your equipment needs to be on the mark. Wright required an additional 10 percent of its equipment and, under pressure, he could not find it. He had to use the tried and tested. But he has a strong spirit to return.
John part: we saw Rob Cross the 2017 world Cup form, though, and started appearing in recent years. There is increased concentration and attention that he receives. He has more obligations as world champion. There is a new reality, control is a different thing when everyone’s gunning for you. Last year he got a huge medium and got it all, and you wonder when it might stop.
Rod Studd: Barney. He’s done so well in previous years – it was one of the greatest finals night when he won in 2014, beating mvg and Phil Taylor. This year he was inconsistent. He will be disappointed. I wonder if last week’s 7-0 thrashing Smith Barney does pull your socks up.
What are you looking forward to?
Rod Studd: double Header in Rotterdam was a smart move by the PDC after the terrible weather in Exeter cost us that night. Mvg takes on Barney, which is probably the biggest match in world Darts.
John’s included: two nights in a row in Rotterdam will be riveting. There is so much to play for. He can’t help but be interested because of the atmosphere, electricity, and significant matches.
Can Smith continue these presentations and to reach the semi-finals? It would be brilliant if you could. Two or three wins should do it. There was a fresh feel about this Premier League – we could see three new faces in the semi-finals.
Back to back nights will be held in Rotterdam next week
Wayne Mardle: Barney V Michael in Rotterdam can be a League match. Barney will have a majority fan-base to make noise. Michael wants to keep them quiet, but also keep some playing. Both will be under pressure. This could be huge for Michael to stay at the top and in the playoffs Barney hope.
Rod Harrington: for the first time in many years, we will have three or four players in the two playoff spots.
Not 2, not 3 and not 4 may have six players going after him. Gary Anderson not home and Rob Cross may fall back into the pack if he loses to Michael Smith [this week]. Every week, you will see so much change, because it is so close.
