Pep Guardiola: Manchester United fans should be ashamed after Phil Foden chants

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has accused Manchester United fans of lacking decency after they hurled vulgar abuse at Phil Foden's mother during Sunday's derby.

Guardiola said the opposition fans should be ashamed of their behaviour as they also attacked the England player as he left the pitch after a dismal goalless draw at Old Trafford.

He said: “The shouting at him? It's a lack of dignity. But that's not what United are about, it's just people.

“We are so vulnerable, especially those who are now on the screens of world football – coaches, owners and footballers in particular.

“Honestly, I don’t understand what people think, including Phil’s mother, who is involved in this.

“It's a lack of honesty, of generosity – and they should be ashamed. But it's a reality, it happens everywhere, not just in the UK, let's say, but everywhere.”

The draw saw City miss out on a chance to return to the Premier League's top four, while United remain in 13th place.

Guardiola said: “Of course it would have been better to win, but Old Trafford is Old Trafford – you always have to be at your best (to win).”

“When we lost the ball, we were not in the best shape and they could attack. The first 10-15 minutes of the second half were our best moments and I saw some positive moments, but we were not in a position to seriously threaten them. But that's okay. We take a point and move on.”

Former United defender Gary Neville, now a TV pundit, criticised both teams, saying the minor fixture was played “like a friendly”.

United manager Ruben Amorim did not object to the criticism but said it was unfair to compare the matches to previous derbies, which underlines what was the worst season in his club's history.

Amorim said: “I understand that Gary Neville is critical of everything, so I take that into account.

“But I also realise that we are not fighting – we are at a point where we are having the worst season in history.
