Oscar Piastri 'comes to life' to pass George Russell and Lando Norris for pole position

Oscar Piastri strengthened his position in the title race by taking his first pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Norris won the opening race of the season in Australia last weekend, while Piastri finished ninth after retiring in the rain, narrowly behind his McLaren team-mate.

However, Piastri showed excellent speed at the second round in Shanghai, beating Mercedes' George Russell by just 0.082 seconds, while Norris remained in third place, more than a tenth of a second behind the Australian.

Max Verstappen took fourth place ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who had taken his first win for Ferrari in the previous sprint race.

After Norris's season-opening win in Melbourne, he was widely considered the championship favourite given McLaren's obvious advantage over the competition. Russell even went so far as to say McLaren should win every race this season.

However, Norris suffered two setbacks on Saturday when he made a mistake on the opening lap of the sprint race and finished only eighth, and then lost pole on the grid for the main event on Sunday.

Norris was just 0.090 seconds behind Piastri heading into the final runs, but he had to abort his second fastest lap as his teammate extended his lead.

To make matters worse for Norris, Russell moved past him in the closing minutes of the race, setting a great lap to take his place on the front row in his Silver Arrows.

“It was a defining moment in my career,” Piastri said after taking first place.

“I just felt elation in my helmet. It was a tough journey, but we made it.”

After getting out of the car, he added: “I just found a good pace in Q3 and the car clicked. I felt alive in Q3 too. I'm happy with what I did. The laps were a bit sloppy but I'm just thrilled to be on pole.”

Norris added: “It's always disappointing when I don't get pole but Oscar deserved it today. I'm happy for him. It was just a few mistakes and I had a weekend like that too.”
