Nicholas Jackson was sent off as Chelsea suffered a 3-1 defeat to Flamengo in the Club World Cup.
Pedro Neto opened the scoring for the Blues early in the game, but Enzo Maresca's side collapsed in Philadelphia in the second half.
The Blues conceded twice and Jackson was sent off for a rough tackle just six minutes after the break.
Their plight was compounded when Wallace Yan scored the decisive goal late in the match, adding to goals from earlier substitute Bruno Henrique and veteran Danilo.
The game, played at Lincoln Financial Field in front of 54,019 spectators, left Chelsea with one win and one defeat from their two Group D matches, having previously looked set to take a significant step towards reaching the last 16.
It was a disappointment for the full debut of new striker Liam Delap, who was brought in to replace Jackson, and a notable setback for Flamengo coach Filipe Luis, who had previously worked at the London club.
The game started with a lot of energy and energy, but despite the fact that the Brazilians looked more confident in the hot weather (27°C at the start of the match), they found it difficult to create obvious attacking opportunities.
Former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho struck early on but Robert Sanchez had no problem in goal.
Despite a lack of possession and Cole Palmer's poor play on the flank, Chelsea created danger on the counter-attack.
Delap came close to opening the scoring when he raced forward and forced Agustin Rossi to handball the ball.
Chelsea took the lead when Neto capitalised on a lucky deflection from Wesley's attempted clearance.
The Portuguese broke forward from the centre of the field and calmly scored his second goal of the tournament from the edge of the penalty area.
Neto almost created another penalty for Delap but his effort was stopped by Wesley and Chelsea's penalty appeal was turned down after Enzo Fernandes went down in the area.
Levi Colville headed the ball off the line from a Flamengo free-kick, but it was not until the second period that the Brazilians began to pose a serious threat.
Gerson should have equalised when he cut in behind Colville to create an opening, but his poor shot was intercepted by Trevoh Chalobah. It bounced to Gonzalo Plata, who somehow fired wide.
Chelsea came within inches of a second when Leo Pereira, under pressure from Delap, sent the ball just wide of his own post, but the Blues were unable to control the situation.
They were saved again when Sanchez capsized off the Plata.
The score was levelled at the end of the hour of play when Plata shot at the goal and Enrique rushed to attack at the far post.
Chelsea were in despair and were hurt again just moments later when Enrique crossed and headed home a corner for Danilo to volley home.
