Newcastle have made a formal bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Cesko after manager Eddie Howe said the situation with unsettled star Alexander Isak was “far from ideal”.
All eyes are now on St James' Park as the Premier League club look to keep hold of the Swedish striker while also trying to land a big-name forward.
Newcastle have stepped up talks with Leipzig over Cesco, who is also being pursued by Manchester United, and are reported to have submitted an offer of up to £69.7million, according to PA news agency.
It comes after the Magpies rejected a £110million bid for Isak on Friday from Liverpool, who recently beat them to the signing of Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitikey.
“I think in my situation I'm very far removed from what's going on at home,” Newcastle manager Howe said of Isak.
“I was informed yesterday of an application that had been submitted. The application had been rejected before I knew about it, so I suppose there are people in England who are looking into this situation.
“I don't really know what's going to happen next but from our side we still support Alex in every way we can and I still want to see him in a Newcastle shirt again.”
Isak missed Newcastle's pre-season tour to Asia due to what the club described as a “minor thigh injury”, but rumours of his discontent soon emerged.
Howe admitted: “You don't know what's going to happen next,” and, remarkably, he learned from the news that the 25-year-old was training at his former club Real Sociedad.
