Luke Wright and Tymal Mills: Young Sussex talent can transform county into title pace-setters

Sussex new optimism for 2018.

One of the most dominant districts cricket at the turn of the century, winning seven trophies in six years, spanning 2003 to 2009, Sussex had very little to celebrate after.

There was a division two championship and promotion back to the top tier to enjoy in 2010, but after the departure to return in 2015, a young talented group flatters to deceive in recent years.

They took fourth place, behind leaders advancing in two divisions for two consecutive years and in the past have made the T20 finals day in 2012, the same year they recently qualified for the latter stages of the domestic one-day competition.

But, in the coveted Jason Gillespie to coach a man to awaken the sleeping giant – Gillespie won back to back County championship crown while to reply to Yorkshire in 2014 and 2015, the promotion from the second League in his first season in 2012.

Sussex Yorkshire not huge proportions, but of course, they were sleeping and needed to Wake up. Early signs are that the players respond.

“He was brilliant,” Sussex stalwart and new captain T20, Luke Wright, told Sky Sports cricket. “He’s Jason Gillespie – so obviously everyone already has a large Elevator big name and when you look at what he’s already won.

“In Sussex we want to play young English talent, Sussex boys, use of the Academy. It is very a lot on that – we have a very young team in Warwickshire on Friday [for the first game of the season].

“He was very calm, ultra-positive, trying to relieve the tension the young guys that have already made a big difference and hopefully we can take that into this season.

“Whether we win something, we’ll see how we go. But perhaps T20, where we look at our strongest.”

An explosion of vitality is really the best chance Sussex in securing their first silverware since the last victory in the domestic T20 comp in 2009.

Wright presides over a formidable looking bowling attack, in particular – who is who T20 franchise names, including England regulars Tymal products and Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer fresh from the big bash and IPL fame and Afghanistan teen leg-spinning sensation, Rashid Khan, sly foreign signing.

Mill – to play purely as a specialist T20 for Sussex, and still hopes for a deal photoepilation is pleased at the prospect, telling sky Sports cricket: “our bowling attack looks very strong and there is real pressure on us to deliver. But there is a real sense of hype and excitement around the camp because of this.

“Wrighty has made the captaincy of the T20 a couple of years ago – he played over 200 games T20 cricket, so he knows his stuff and, speaking as a bowler, he’s great to play under, very calm and he trusts us.

Archer discusses his remarkable growth, your online IPL a million dollars and his test cricket ambitions of England

“Jofra was brilliant for us. Last summer he was awesome in all formats. Then I played with him in the big bash – he was my teammate in Hobart and he was great there, and fully deserving of the IPL contract he received.

“My agent is still working hard to try and make me IPL opportunity. I’m now at the mercy of injuries, but I keep myself busy teaching, holding themselves as they can. If a concert is, I’ll be ready.”

And mills sing the praises of Archer, Wright is also excited at the prospect the captain of the young Prodigy pace.

“I think this guy is an absolute superstar,” added Wright. “He has a great mentality and just wants to play against the best.

“The bigger the problem, the more it excited and the faster he bowls. I think it’s going to take the IPL by storm.

“He is one of a number of options in attack, so it will be very interesting, as captain, to manage these guys. I will allow them to govern themselves, really, as they all know what they are doing. My main job will be held on Board for them.

“I enjoyed the captaincy last time. It was just one of those things where I thought that leaving was the right thing at the time, for everyone. But now, with the arrival of a new coach things are changing very fast, and he sat me down and said he wanted me to get it done. It was an easy decision.”

It was the first step Gillespie as coach, clarifying the captain’s armband during the season of 2018, setting a Ben brown as captain in four-day and 50-over formats, Wright returned to his place in t20s.

Wright, brown and Chris Nash – who has since retired to Nottinghamshire – all positions in points last season.

The loss of Nash, in fact, always present in the Sussex side since his debut in 2002 and another experienced head to help a developing culture of young talents of the South coast, will be deeply felt. But who can step up in his place?

Delray Rawlins, the former star of the England U19s, is very highly rated and Wright also predicted big things for its 2017 launch top-scorer Luke wells. Now 27 years old, wells is actually one of the more senior statesmen in the side is the international recognition to be on the cards?

“Maybe I’m biased, but I think he switched to his game massively,” Wright says wells. “He scored a huge track last year and if he follows it with a similar season, I don’t see any reason why he can’t put a little pressure on a couple to get to this test by England.

“Especially if and when Alastair cook finishes, they need another knife. Not so many people putting their hand but it is probably one. I hope England look at him.

“With regard to Delray, he was with the North-South group and the MCC, recently. I know what they like.

“He’s the one who still needs to know he’s still raw, but he has a lot of potential. We also have Phil salt, another very interesting player. Harry Finch. And, in bowling, there’s George, Garton, Stuart Whittingham.

“There are a lot of guys who have all been through the ranks together. You have to give these guys a chance and let them play”.

Left hand quick left hand quick, mills also expects big things from Garton. But he is not ready to keep up the speed gun just yet.

“George has all the tools,” added mills. “I was lucky enough to know that the left arm PACE desirable all over the world and I’m sure he will get many opportunities. I’m faster though!”

With such exciting young talent by 2018, with Gillespie at the helm, Sussex may be in the early season pace-setters.
