Luke Shaw says Man Utd no longer have 'underachievers' and praises Ruben Amorim

Luke Shaw is fully behind Ruben Amorim's no-nonsense style of work as the Manchester United manager aims to change an atmosphere the defender has sometimes described as 'toxic'.

The 30-year-old is the most experienced player at Old Trafford, having joined the club from Southampton in 2014 for a then-record fee for a teenager.

Shaw has experienced many highs and lows during his time at United, with Amorim becoming the fifth permanent manager he has played under.

The left-back said the whole squad had to question whether they were good enough to represent the club after May's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham and believes the standards in pre-season have improved significantly.

“It's not hard to see from the outside what it was like,” Shaw told reporters during their trip to the United States.

“For most of the time I've been here over the last few years, I've experienced extremely negative emotions. The environment can be quite toxic, it's not healthy at all.

“We need a healthy, positive, energetic and happy atmosphere.

“I think when all of that is present, you feel freer and you can perform better on the pitch.”

Shaw claims Amorim has the full support of the United squad as the manager demands everyone to give their best in everything they do.

“His mentality, his demands, he's very strict with the team,” Shaw said.

He leaves no stone unturned and I think there are no longer any laggards in this group. I think everyone has to put the team first. He made that clear.

“I think he picks the players he thinks will fit the team best and that's his choice.

“We, the players, fully support him, his ideas and what he wants to achieve in this team.

We feel like a real team, especially in pre-season. Since I came back, the team has become very close-knit and we need to maintain that to become more like a family, to have everyone together and moving in the same direction.”

United finished last season in 15th place and are currently taking part in the Premier League Summer Series
