Five hours of excruciating sporting agony gave way to scenes of unbridled joy as the crowd at Rory McIlroy's home club in County Down celebrated his dramatic Masters victory.
After a night of incredible emotional rollercoaster rides for the Holywood Golf Club membership, the club erupted in joy when a local hero converted his birdie putt on the first playoff hole at Augusta National to finally clinch the long-awaited green jacket and make his mark on golf history as the winner of the Grand Slam, which includes major titles.
There were tears and cheers as the club's loyal fans embraced and young club members, dreaming of emulating their hometown champion's success, chanted his name.
The celebrations were in stark contrast to the somber mood that had permeated the clubhouse earlier that evening, during the agonising moments of McIlroy's final round, when it seemed he had missed his chance for glory.
Club captain Trevor Haven expressed confidence that 2025 will be the year of McIlroy.
“We are very proud – this is a significant event for Holywood Golf Club,” he said.
“When I became captain I got my green jacket and I always said, 'If I get my green jacket, Rory will follow me.'”
