Gary Neville delighted that 'star player' Bruno Fernandes is set to stay at Manchester United

Gary Neville has expressed his delight at news that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is set to turn down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

The 30-year-old Portuguese has been at the centre of rumours linking him with a £100m (€120m) move to Al-Hilal, with the Saudi Arabian club reportedly willing to offer him £700,000 (€829,000) a week.

Although United did not respond to requests for comment from PA news agency, reports emerged on Tuesday that the midfielder does not intend to make such a decision at this stage of his career.

The news will come as a boost to head coach Ruben Amorim in his efforts to rebuild the team after a disappointing season.

United suffered their worst defeat in Premier League history, finishing 15th, with Fernandes one of the few players to emerge in the black.

Former United and England defender Neville told Sky Sports News: “It does matter.

“I think there was a point in that situation that would have meant United would have received that level of money and for someone of Bruno's age you certainly couldn't say it would have been a bad deal.

“But on the other hand, Bruno Fernandes has been Manchester United's star player – and sometimes the only one – for the last four, five, six years. His role is extremely important.
