Harry Brooke's side suffered a crushing defeat with the score 8-49 and were bowled out in 24.3 overs, while South Africa themselves took just 20.5 overs to reach the required score.

Twenty-two-year-old fast bowler Sonny Baker made 76 in his first seven overs of international cricket on his debut, while Aiden Markram (86 off 54 balls) led the way in the race for a fifty off 23 balls.

Jofre Archer could and perhaps should have picked Ryan Rickelton (31 off 59) for a duck in his first over, with the scooped ball deemed to have bounced into Joe Root's hands before the next ball, which would have been DRS-ed, was not reviewed.

Jamie Smith makes a superb catch on a bad day for England.

Brydon Carse also failed to take Markram's wicket in the 51st minute, catching him at mid-on with a free to make matters worse for England before the Proteas' first ball was finally caught at cover by Jamie Smith – a stunning diving catch – by Adil Rashid (3-26).

In a rather bizarre end to the match, with Rashid needing just one point, he completed a hat-trick, adding to that of Themba Bavuma (6) and Tristan Stubbs (0) from successive deliveries.

England 131 in 24.3 overs: Jamie Smith (54 off 48 balls); Keshav Maharaj (4-22), Vian Mulder (3-33)

South Africa 137-3 in 20.5 overs: Aiden Markram (86 off 55 balls), Ryan Rickelton (31 off 59); Adil Rashid (3-26)

England suffered a complete collapse in Leeds

However, the damage had long been done by England's lacklustre performance after the visitors brought them onto the pitch at the draw.

Ryan Rickleton made a brilliant catch and Joe Root was sent off.

An out-of-form Ben Duckett (5) was soon dismissed and Root (14) was sensationally ducked by Rickelton behind the stumps, but a fine fifty at the other end from Smith (54 off 48) looked to have given the hosts an 82-2 lead before the innings unfolded in thrilling style.

Brooke's dismissal at the end of the 14th over (out for 12 after a mix-up with Smith) triggered the collapse, and Smith was next in line, almost immediately holing out for his second ODI fifty, hitting his 10th four on the boundary.

England captain Harry Brook was dismissed for 12 in a horrific batting collapse.

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj (4-22) had no trouble dismissing Jacob Bethell (1) and Will Jacks (7) before Wayan Mulder (3-33), who had taken up a key position against Smith, added Jos Butler (15) and Archer (0) in successive balls.

England's Jacob Bethell is out after just one run as their disastrous performance against South Africa continues.

Rashid stood out for a hat-trick but England were not left for long after that, with Maharaj also taking two from two runs to end the innings – Rashid (9) and Baker (0) bowled first ball to end a dreadful debut.

Baker had a tough time breaking into international cricket

England's paltry total was hardly enough, especially against the backdrop of Markram's fearsome batting, who smashed 13 boundaries and two sixes in his devastating innings.

Baker's first knock in international cricket was worth 14, while Markram hit a pair of sixes in his next over that cost him 20.

Brook kept faith in his young, fast bowler who had impressed so much in the Manchester Originals hundred, but Rickelton was the next to cash in, taking a couple of boundaries in Baker's third over, while Markram was smashing again in his fourth, reaching his quick-fire fifty off the last ball in a gruelling first four-over spell that cost him 56.

Baker returned for a neater second spell, scoring 20 in three overs, although a first ODI wicket eluded him.

Markram perished late in the match as he tried to up the ante again in pursuit of a hundred, while captain Bavuma and Stubbs gifted Rashid a couple more runs before Dewald Brewis wrapped up South Africa's win in style with a six. The entire match lasted just over 45 overs in total.

England now need to lick their wounds quickly and put in a much better performance in the second one-day match at Lord's on Thursday in the hope of extending the series to the final in Southampton on Sunday.

Brook: England need to move on quickly

England captain Harry Brook:

England's Harry Brook and South Africa's Aiden Markram discuss Sonny Baker's debut during England's first defeat in one-day internationals.

“[The batting] wasn't perfect. It wasn't a great start to the series. It was just one of those bad days and we need to move on as quickly as possible.”

“Everyone will put their hands up and say they had a bad day except [Smith], who batted really well. We just couldn't get it together.”

“I thought we bowled well. Baker was a little short of pace at the start but it was good to see us keep going and giving 100 per cent. That's what we demand from the bowlers.”

“We almost used it as a training session when the game was no longer available, so it was good to see the boys show off their skills.”

“England played some terrible shots”

Mark Butcher from Sky Sports Cricket:

Former England cricketer Mark Butcher was left unhappy with the hosts' performance as they were bowled out in 25 overs against South Africa.

“That pitch was amazing and England were going ahead – scoring seven goals after the first five or six.

“The most unusual and frankly worrying thing about England's one-day game is their lack of cushioning. They find it difficult to handle pressure and build partnerships, which is vital to playing this format properly.”

“They had the firepower to deal with any attack in the last 15-20 overs, but they were all out before the 25th over!

“South Africa were very good, but not that good. England played some terrible shots and couldn't score enough for their bowlers to even begin to defend themselves.”

Athers: England caught off guard

Michael Atherton, Sky Sports Cricket:

“I don't think England were careless with the bat and there were no warning signs in the Powerplay of what was to come.

“In 50-over cricket, pace is important and you need to find a cruising speed – you can’t chase the ball like in T20 or The Hundred or be slow like in Tests.

“England started well but then the collapse was alarming and I think they were caught off guard after very little preparation.

“They need to act now.”
