Coronavirus: Paolo Maldini and son Daniel test positive

4:17 English football will not return until April 30 ‘at the earliest’, it has been decided at an emergency meeting between Premier League clubs, but the 2019/20 season will be extended indefinitely

Italy has recorded more than 50,000 coronavirus cases. The death toll in the country is approaching 5,000, making it the worst-affected nation in the world by the virus.

Almost 20 Serie A players have tested positive for coronavirus, including Juventus trio Paulo Dybala, Blaise Matuidi and Daniele Rugani, as well as Sampdoria and former Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

Paolo Maldini is an icon of the Italian game, having won seven league titles and five European Cups with AC Milan in addition to making the most Serie A appearances (647) of any outfield player in the history of the competition.

His late father Cesare made over 300 appearances for the club and managed them on two occasions. He also coached the Italian national side at the 1998 World Cup in France.

Daniel came on as a late substitute in Milan’s 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona in February to become the third generation of the Maldini family to play for the 18-time Serie A champions.
