“The majority of complaints come from the minor games, where players can be overwhelmed to win the ball,” the Council advised the clubs.

Tube ladies chair basketball George Meade confirmed that the referees have been advised to apply the rules of FIBA on this issue and instruct the player to cut the long nails before they are allowed on the court.

“It happened in my own club (Ballincollig), where the girl is not allowed to go to court until she cut her nails. She wasn’t happy, because it paid €55 to get them done in that day.”

The foreign Ministry added: “many problems arise when players complain about the scratches on the arm or in the jaw, but it would be very serious if someone got an eye injury due to long nails.”

Clubs have been alerted to include the scissors as part of their team kit to clip the nails and to inform their players that they will not be allowed on the court more with excessively long nails.

FIBA rules (4.4.2) States: “players shall not wear equipment (objects) that may cause injury to other players. (Or) objects that could cut or scratch – nails should be cut short’.

“Plaster is not enough, because they continue to fall. Nails should be cut to the desired length, or the referee will not allow the girl in question to court. The judges brought it to the attention of the Board that it is a growing problem in girls ‘ games,” Chairman of the Board of cork added.

In a note to the clubs, Mr. Mead said: “we are introducing fingernails as an object that can cause harm. It is in the interests of all clubs that the nails cut short, as failure to comply will result in players to sit out games.

“This rule can have a significant impact on the juvenile teams must have eight players or forfeit the game. Coaches should inform their players of this rule.”
