Arsenal's hopes of Champions League glory were dashed after Ousmane Dembele scored Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg of their semi-final at the Emirates Stadium.
Dembele opened the scoring four minutes before Arsenal had a goal disallowed in the second half when VAR ruled Mikel Merino's header from Declan Rice's free-kick was offside.
Substitute Gonzalo Ramos hit the crossbar in the dying minutes of the game and Mikel Arteta's side must now hit the crossbar in Paris next week to reach their first final in almost two decades.
Arteta had asked for the best atmosphere possible at the Emirates but the home fans were left in shock with just three minutes and 17 seconds remaining.
Dembele, who was sacked by Luis Enrique after Arsenal's comfortable 2-0 league win over PSG here in October, was key. The Frenchman picked up the ball in midfield and was given an undisturbed run before passing to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Dembele received the ball on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area and struck the ground with his left foot, before the ball ended up in the net past David Raya.
The start of the match was a nightmare for Arsenal, who spent the next 20 minutes merely following PSG's shadow.
Kvaratskhelia called for a penalty when Jurrien Timber put his left hand on the PSG winger's stomach, but his request was turned down. Moments later, Kvaratskhelia tried again when his shot rebounded off Timber's studs and Raya reacted well.
