Twitter Removes RIA Novosti From Search Results

The social media platform previously labelled major Russian media as “state-affiliated”, while state-linked or state-funded western media outlets didn’t receive such a branding. The accounts, labelled by Twitter were later ghosted, as users could not find them in the search bar if the said user was not already following them.

Twitter removed the Russian news agency RIA Novosti from its search results on Monday.

Rossiya Segodnya also pointed to Twitter’s failure to fairly apply its decision to label state-affiliated media outlets.

The news comes after Twitter last month also stopped showing the accounts of RT and Sputnik in the search bar. The platform slapped “state-affiliated media” labels on a number of media organisations – thoughtfully omitting Western outlets like the BBC, Voice of America, or National Public Radio.
