Teacher raises enough money to buy Easter baskets for 3 5th-grade classes

Last week, before the holiday weekend, Sheehy elementary school teacher Brent Walker was shopping for school supplies when he took to Facebook with an idea: he asked if 20 friends will be interested in the transfer of $10 apiece so he could buy ready-made Easter baskets for 20 students.

“Anybody want to sponsor a student? I don’t know how to make the Easter basket this year, but I know it will make their day!” he said, in particular, in the post.

The ABC NewsThe students were surprised on Thursday when they arrived at school. Teacher Brent Walker said that all remaining funds will be used for benefits and parties for the rest of the year.

Within an hour after placing it, Walker has raised more than $700. Then he decided to buy and give Easter baskets to all three classes of fifth graders at the school. The baskets were delivered Thursday.

“I was like ‘wow!'” student Ray seania Simmons told ABC affiliate WFTS-TV. “It was amazing”.

Ray seania said her Easter basket contained the art supplies, which she appreciated, because she loves to draw.

The night before delivery, Walker posted a video outside of the local Walmart, showing the store five carts filled with ready-made baskets to thank all who donated as well as Walmart, which gave him a discount.

“I’m probably going to start crying in a minute,” he said in the Facebook post. “It’s just unbelievable.”

Walker said that the extra money from donations will be used for all three fifth grade teachers for promotion, prizes and parties for students.

“It was an amazing thing to see,” said he WFTS.

Ray seania said that she didn’t get an Easter basket from a teacher until Thursday.

“He deserves the thanks,” said Walker, who teaches math and reading. “He is a very good teacher. He is a generous teacher. … [And] he expects the best from us.”
