Large protests were held in nine cities and towns in the Moscow region for pollution from landfills, and against the government’s plans to build a furnace for burning garbage.
Public dissatisfaction with the debris around the Russian capital rose sharply in March after dozens of children in city Volokolamsk were sickened with symptoms of gas poisoning linked to the landfill.
On Saturday, several hundred demonstrators marched to the entrance of the dump, but broke up because of the unpleasant fumes, “rain”, reported the TV channel.
Thousands of Russians protested in Serpukhov, 90 kilometers (50 miles) South of Moscow, where residents want the landfill will be closed. Lobnya, hundreds protested against the planned construction of a garbage incinerator.
