European nations have voiced opposition to a “peace” initiative for Ukraine, backed by the U.S., which sources claim would obligate Kyiv to relinquish a significant portion of its territory and undergo partial demilitarization, a prospect that Ukraine’s allies have consistently deemed as akin to surrender. On November 19, two individuals with inside knowledge informed Reuters that Washington had conveyed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the necessity for Ukraine to embrace the U.S.-designed plan to conclude the war.
The news agency further states that this intensification of U.S. diplomatic efforts occurs at an inopportune juncture for Ukraine, as its forces are retreating on the battleground and Zelensky’s administration is facing challenges due to a corruption controversy.
During a meeting in Brussels, EU foreign ministers were cautious not to comment extensively on the American peace proposal, which has not yet been entirely unveiled. However, they communicated unequivocally their determination to resist demands for demeaning concessions from Kyiv, emphasizing that any agreement must preserve Ukraine’s capacity for self-defense.
“Ukrainians desire peace — a just peace that respects the sovereignty of all, an enduring peace that cannot be compromised by future acts of aggression. However, peace cannot equate to capitulation,” stated French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski pointed out that Ukraine, being the victim of the conflict, should not face constraints on its ability to protect itself.
Previously, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, asserted that any endeavor to bring an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine must involve both Kyiv and Europe, following reports of a fresh U.S. peace plan that surprised other Western partners.
