Tim Kaine says he won’t back Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State

Senator Tim Kane (d-VA) voted to confirm Mike Pompeo as CIA Director, but he opposes him as Secretary of state, with reference to the Director of the “anti-diplomacy disposition.” Kane sits in the Senate Committee on foreign relations — the one that held the confirmation hearing for Pompeo this week. “I decided to oppose the nomination of Mike Pompeo as Secretary of state”, – he said in a statement. “I honor his public service and voted for him to be CIA Director. But consideration should be the main diplomat, I can’t ignore the serious doubts about his anti-diplomacy disposition.”

Pompey toughen positions on Iran and North Korea and its support for President Donald trump’s decision to bomb Syria, insisting the ex-US President Barack Obama not to take military action appeared to seal the deal for Kane, who drew the Director as a politician is obliged overly aggressive leverage. “Now more than ever, we need a Secretary of state who will stand strong for the energetic American diplomacy. I believe that Mike Pompeo will exacerbate the weakness of President trump, not to defend our diplomatic legacy. For this reason, I will vote against his candidacy”.

Kane previously telegraphed their doubts about voting for Pompeo Secretary of state. “I’m still weighing, but I’ll tell you, I went to serious questions and they laid yesterday rested on his testimony,” Cain said on CNN on Friday. Kane was one of two foreign relations Committee Democrats to vote in favor of Pompey in the CIA.

The confirmation of Pompey is not a slam dunk

Pompeo needs the support of Committee Democrats, if he hopes to obtain confirmation as top us diplomat. Senator Rand Paul (R-ky) has said he will not vote for Pompeo, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ), that is at home in cancer treatment. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (d-NH), another Democrat of the Committee who voted in favor of Pompey the CIA expressed doubts about him as Secretary of state. And the Republicans have only a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate right now. John Sullivan, former Deputy Secretary of state, currently the acting Secretary of state.

Not to have someone constantly engaged in the state Department, especially given the unstable situation in Iran, North Korea and Syria, is clearly problematic. The Department was eroded under Tillerson, who left office without any major accomplishments —he also pushed Slash “inefficiency” in the Department, resulting in the resignation of 60 percent of its senior U.S. diplomats.

Trump has a variety of other positions in government that he has not yet filled in. He often accuses the Democrats, but in many cases, it is the President who is not nominated anyone.

Mike Pompeo pretty intense

Pompeo is a former three-term Republican Congress members. He is known as a hardliner against Iran and his to burn Hillary Clinton over Benghazi, much of which is conspiracy. Trump came to love him as CIA Director, and they formed a close relationship over the daily briefings of Pompey intelligence.

VOX Alex ward, who has a full explainer on Pompey and his background, posted some controversy surrounding him and what his appointment might mean:

On Thursday at hearings in the Senate, Senator Cory Booker (d-NJ) grilled Pompeo about his past associations with known anti-Muslim ideologues. Senator Bob Menendez (Democrat, new Jersey) indicated Pompey a few contradictory statements, noting that much of what he said at the hearing does not line up with the position which he did in the past on issues such as the use of military force, Islam, and LGBT rights. “We’re done here, I’m trying to think about what Mike Pompeo I will be asked to vote,” he said. It seems that the way forward for the confirmation of Pompey is anything but clear.
