The body of a miner has been found at a copper mine in Chile where collapses were caused by a moderate earthquake two days ago, a mine official said Saturday.
Rescue crews are continuing to try to reach five workers trapped in the El Teniente mine in central Chile after a magnitude 4.2 seismic event triggered a rockfall on Thursday evening.
This mine is one of the most important in the country's copper industry.
The remains discovered Saturday belong to one of five workers trapped underground, a spokesman for the rescue team drilling through a 90-metre-deep rock formation to evacuate victims said.
El Teniente mine director Andres Music clarified that the identity of the deceased has not yet been established.
Earlier on Friday, another miner, Paulo Marin Tapia, whose body was recovered shortly after the local collapse, was identified. He was not part of the five trapped workers.
Nine miners were injured in the incident, classified as a “seismic event,” according to Chilean state-owned Codelco, which operates the mine.
