Greetings from The Logoff: John Bolton, previously the national security lead for President Donald Trump, received an indictment today regarding accusations of inappropriately handling confidential documents.

What is Bolton accused of? Bolton was charged with 18 distinct violations involving the keeping and dispatching of classified information, primarily associated with “journal-like” notes shared through email with two individuals, thought to be his wife and daughter. Federal agents from the FBI searched his residence in August and purportedly gathered materials bearing classification labels.

What is the background? Bolton’s involvement in Republican politics extends back to the Reagan government, and he held the position of ambassador to the United Nations during President George W. Bush’s time in office. He served as Trump’s national security head in 2018 and 2019, but exited the role amidst conflict.

The connection between Trump and Bolton deteriorated further when a book authored by Bolton was heavily cited in Trump’s initial impeachment process. Bolton was subjected to a federal inquiry into potential exposure of classified data within the book, which was subsequently concluded under the Biden leadership.

Is this another politically motivated legal action? This situation presents differently compared to the indictments of former FBI Director James Comey and New York state Attorney General Letitia James in recent weeks.

While the legal actions against Comey and James are overtly political, the probe into Bolton began prior to the second Trump term and seems to possess greater basis. A seasoned prosecutor — rather than a Trump loyalist selected for the role — presented the allegations to a grand jury.

There’s still reason to suspect political motivation, however: Trump has long desired to target Bolton, and high-ranking Justice Department figures reportedly pushed prosecutors to expedite this indictment.

What’s the overarching view? Inappropriate handling of classified documents is quite typical among former officials; in 2023, National Archives representatives indicated every president since Reagan has engaged in such conduct — including Trump, who only faced charges following persistent governmental efforts to retrieve classified materials. Aside from the specific elements of Bolton’s scenario, the chance of selective prosecution in document-related cases could indicate an increasing exploitation of the Justice Department under Trump.

And now, it’s time to sign off…

My colleague Sigal Samuel authors a remarkable recurring advice segment, Your Mileage May Vary. I particularly appreciated her most recent piece, a well-considered response to an inquiry about distinguishing art from its creator and methods for — or considerations against — enjoying artistic works from individuals with questionable histories.
