Greetings from The Logoff: Head of State Donald Trump successfully orchestrated the prosecution of yet another of his private political adversaries, New York’s chief legal officer Letitia James.
What transpired? James faced indictment for financial institution irregularities on Thursday in Virginia, where she possesses a holiday residence. She was previously the subject of a federal probe concerning potential mortgage-related improprieties regarding that dwelling, but investigators had earlier been unable to uncover confirmation that she perpetrated any offense.
Why did James face indictment? Because Donald Trump desired it. The previous US attorney representing the Eastern District of Virginia opted not to file accusations against James and was compelled to resign near the close of the prior month. Subsequently, Trump designated Lindsey Halligan, previously his personal legal representative, as US attorney.
Halligan was specifically designated to pursue Trump’s detractors; in a social media communication from September directed toward Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump penned, “What about Comey, Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff, Leticia??? They’re all culpable as sin, but there will be no action taken. … JUSTICE MUST PREVAIL, IMMEDIATELY!!!”
In the time since, former FBI director James Comey and Letitia James have both been formally accused.

What are Trump’s previous interactions with James? In 2022, James initiated litigation against Trump, three of his offspring, and his family enterprise representing the state of New York, claiming extensive improprieties; he was adjudged guilty by a judicial officer in 2023 and mandated to pay a $500 million assessment, among other penalties. This assessment has since been invalidated and remains subject to legal challenge.
What is the broader picture? Bill Pulte, the Federal Housing Finance Agency director who has evolved into one of Trump’s key assailants, has aided in unearthing questionable mortgage-related deceit allegations against a multitude of Trump’s rivals, including James, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook.
Trump had sought to leverage these accusations as a justification for ousting Cook from the Fed governing board, albeit she has not been formally charged with any offenses; today’s indictment signifies a troubling intensification in Trump’s plans for deploying such accusations.
