A British couple have died in a cable car accident near Naples.
According to local news reports, Graham Wynne, 65, and Elaine Wynne, 58, were among four people killed in the incident on Thursday in Monte Faito, in the town of Castellammare di Stabia.
It was also reported that an Israeli was killed in the tragedy, and a fifth victim, likely a foreign tourist, was seriously injured.
According to preliminary data, a traction cable broke, which led to the cable car stopping its movement.
A number of people had to be evacuated from another cable car.
Italian prosecutors have launched an investigation into multiple counts of manslaughter and disaster-related charges.
In a message posted on social media, Campania regional president Vincenzo De Luca described the day as “truly tragic and painful” and offered his condolences to the families of those killed and injured.
The mayor of Castellammare, Luigi Vicinanza Sindaco, announced on Facebook that a day of mourning would be declared and all events dedicated to the Easter holidays would be cancelled.
Firefighters, police and Italian mountain rescuers arrived at the scene, located between the popular tourist destinations of Pompeii and Sorrento.
The cable car operator, EAV, said service resumed a week ago with all necessary safety measures in place.
