Britain's King Charles appears in public after brief hospital stay

Britain's King Charles made his first public appearance on Friday, greeting passers-by and supporters after a brief stay in hospital for observation due to side effects related to his cancer treatment.

The 76-year-old monarch has been undergoing treatment since he was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer in February last year following tests following a prostate reduction operation.

Buckingham Palace said Charles returned to his home, Clarence House, near the palace, on Thursday evening after his hospital visit, and his engagements on Friday had been postponed as a precaution.

Charles was spotted leaving Clarence House in a car on Friday morning, sitting in the back seat with the window partly down. BBC video captured the moment Charles greeted those lining the usually busy street between Clarence House and Buckingham Palace.

The palace declined to disclose any details about the side effects, but a royal source described Thursday's incident as “nothing more than a minor bump in the road.”

His state visit to Italy next month with his wife Queen Camilla is still planned, and no further news is expected about his health.

Charles's initial cancer diagnosis came as a surprise less than 18 months into his reign. However, royal aides have since expressed optimism about his health, and although his schedule is closely monitored, he has returned to active work.
