February is often the harshest month of winter in the city, and can be hard on New Yorkers; but for Sarula Bao, the artist behind the February 5, 2024 cover—which she drafted on a recent long plane ride home, after visiting her family in China—it ushers in Lunar New Year, a time for celebrating with family. “The family can be either blood relatives or a found family of friends,” Bao said. “This year, I’m excited to celebrate it in Brooklyn, and I look forward to cooking all the traditional dishes.”

A detail from one of the cut-paper decorations Bao looked at for inspiration.
