Mnuchin: Trump Tweet about Russia, China Currency Devaluation Was 'Warning Shot'

Washington (Sputnik) – a Twitter message, sent by the President of the United States Donald trump is warning Russia and China not to devalue its currency was just a warning shot for the two countries, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin said on Tuesday.

“It was a warning shot in the direction of China and Russia on devaluation,” Mnuchin said in an interview with CNBC. “This is a warning shot, to make sure China not to devalue the national currency, as it was in the past.”

In an interview, Mnuchin asked to explain the message of the trump, because it was contrary to the report published on Friday by the Ministry of Finance, who said that in recent years, the Chinese Currency moved in a way that would benefit U.S. exporters.

On Monday, trump sent out a Twitter message, saying that “Russia and China play the game of currency devaluation, as the US continues to raise interest rates. Not Acceptable!”

The US Treasury Department has again refrained from naming any main trading partners currency manipulators, as she pursues the potential of tariffs and negotiations to try to reduce a huge trade deficit with China, in a semiannual report.

On 6 April, the US Treasury Department added 38 Russian businessmen, high officials and companies to the sanctions list in connection with alleged Moscow “malignant activities”.

Russian lawmakers responded with a broad bill that would freeze the exports to the United States.
