With Donald Trump returning to the presidency of the United States, the existence of the UN General Assembly in New York has become a test for the organization itself. During the high-level week of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the key question remained whether the largest diplomatic platform could hold its own.
The Trump administration announced a million-dollar cut in funding for the UN the day before. On the first day of the debate, September 22, the US president called the UN ineffective, recalling that he had “ended seven wars, dealt with leaders of warring countries, and never once received a call from the UN offering to help.” Trump admitted that he liked the idea of the UN, but its activities were “far from its potential.”

Allies with distance and other incidents
Unlike in previous years, the UN secretariat and Secretary-General António Guterres have avoided showing any ostentatious loyalty to the US president. The UK, France and Canada have even officially recognised Palestine as a state, despite Trump's earlier threats not to do so.

Changing rhetoric about Ukraine and visa restrictions
Trump also said that Ukraine could return all occupied territories, and NATO should shoot down Russian drones that fly into the airspace of Poland or Romania. European diplomats saw this as a sharp change in his rhetoric, but doubted the presence of a real strategy for NATO's actions. Washington may shift the burden of supporting Ukraine to the EU, Politico adds.
