Dark Chocolate Milk: A Natural Energizer for Improving Sprint Performance

A new study published in the journal Nutrients has found that dark chocolate milk can improve sprinting speed and endurance. Scientists from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore found that these products improve short-distance running performance thanks to antioxidants found in flavonoids, which increase oxygen flow to muscles and reduce fatigue.

The experiment involved 20 physically active young men, team sports athletes. They performed a standardized test of repeated sprint ability (10 30-meter sprints). Before each test (several days apart), participants consumed either 500 ml of dark chocolate milk or 500 ml of white chocolate milk (which acted as a placebo) 10 minutes before the start of exercise. This was a randomized, double-blind, crossover study, which ensures high reliability of the results. After consuming dark chocolate milk, participants showed significantly faster overall and best sprint times, as well as a lower fatigue index compared to placebo.

The authors say the combination of sugars and bioactive compounds in dark chocolate may help boost energy recovery and protect muscles from oxidative stress. The researchers say even small improvements — around one percent — could be significant for professional athletes.

Experts emphasize that this is a safe and affordable alternative to artificial energy supplements. Dark chocolate milk can be a simple and natural way to maintain physical fitness and accelerate recovery from training. However, it is important to note that the study was conducted on a small group of physically active male athletes and only studied the short-term (acute) effect. Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term benefits and applicability to other groups.
