Judge Mark Blundell, presiding over the UK Immigration Appeal Tribunal, determined that the attorney had utilized machine learning to compile the documents and neglected to verify the correctness of the data acquired . Additionally, Rahman, as per the judge, endeavored to conceal the utilization of AI, thereby “ squandering” the tribunal’s time .
The instance precipitating these revelations involved two sisters from Honduras seeking refuge in the UK, alleging persecution by a criminal organization. Rahman acted as their representative, though his justifications were dismissed.
Amidst the appeal proceedings, the judge pointed out that among the 12 cited “ authorities , “ certain ones lacked existence entirely, and the remainder failed to substantiate the juridical stances to which the advocate alluded.
In the decree, the judge remarked: “Mr. Rahman seemingly possessed no familiarity with any of the legal precedents he cited in the appeal grounds he purportedly drew up in July of the current year. It seems he had no intention whatsoever of mentioning any of these decisions in his submissions.”
Blundell inferred that the singular plausible explanation was that Rahman drew considerably upon generative artificial intelligence in the preparation of the appeal and endeavored to mask this fact during the session.
