President Donald Trump expressed optimism Tuesday regarding a possible trade agreement between the U.S. and Canada, stating that the two nations had "advanced substantially" in their discussions.
Speaking from the Oval Office alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump seemed to lessen trade tensions, adopting a cordial approach toward a major U.S. trading partner.
"I have affection for Canada and its citizens, and Mark shares that sentiment," Trump remarked.

Trump conceded that rivalry among U.S. and Canadian companies would render any prospective understanding a "complex accord."
"It's a customary business disagreement," Trump continued. "There's nothing inherently wrong with it."
In July, Trump imposed a 35% levy on the majority of commodities and unprocessed materials originating from Canada.
Initially, Canada enacted reciprocal tariffs. Nevertheless, in August, Carney declared exemptions for goods encompassed by the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.
During their previous discussion in May, Carney opposed Trump's controversial proposition to integrate Canada as the 51st state.
"As you’re aware from the property sector, certain assets are not available for purchase. And Canada is not available for acquisition; it will never be for sale," Carney informed Trump.
