Pat Ryan steps down as Cork hurling manager

Pat Ryan has announced his resignation as head coach of the Cork Senior Hurlers.

During his tenure, the 49-year-old has led the team to Munster Championship glory this year and two All-Ireland finals in the last three remarkable seasons.

In a statement via Sarsfields' social media, Ryan revealed that Cork County Council approached him on Friday to continue managing the team but he turned down the offer.

“It has been a great pleasure to be part of this wonderful journey with the Cork Senior Hurling team over the past three years,” wrote Ryan.

“I was honoured on Friday to be invited by the Cork GAA Regional Council to continue in charge of the team, however, after consultation with my family, I have decided that after five years of managing the Cork teams, it is time to move on to new challenges.

“Over this five-year period, the support of an outstanding, dedicated and reliable staff has made my duties much easier.

A special thanks to Wayne, Donal, Brendan, Fergal and our great coach Donal O'Rourke for their hard work on behalf of Cork GAA. To the rest of the team including Ian, Dave, Declan and Thomas, a deep thanks for their continued support and guidance.

Ryan noted “many highs and lows”, adding that the pleasure of working in Cork remains “unforgettable”.

“As a manager you are lucky to have players who are prepared to sacrifice themselves for the club and I have had that in abundance. The road to success is not a straight line but I am confident that given the character of our players and the new talent that will emerge from the clubs efforts, the Liam McCarthy Trophy will soon return to Leeside.”

To Rob and Sean, thank you for your three years of captaincy, showing great leadership and results. My thanks to all the chairmen I have worked with, Tracy Kennedy, Mark Sheehan and most recently Pat Horgan, for their trust.

CEO Kevin O'Donovan and Daniel Lane from Cork GAA have been very supportive and have been able to address any issues promptly to ensure that the Cork team achieves the best possible results.

“Thank you to Sarsfields for their invaluable support over the years and I look forward to returning to Teddy McCarthy Park in my new role.”

“2025 has brought great loss for me and my family but the support of the entire GAA family, especially Cork fans, since the passing of dear Ray has been a source of strength for us.”
