Andy Farrell open to Lions tour of New Zealand

Andy Farrell has not ruled out taking charge of the next British and Irish Lions tour after successfully leading the team to a 2-1 series win against Australia.

The Lions' dream of ending their Australian tour with a perfect record was shattered by a 22-12 defeat in the final Test match at the Accor Stadium in torrential rain, but the team returned home having achieved their ultimate goal.

A first series win in a decade paves the way for Farrell to lead the next expedition to New Zealand, and the Ireland head coach admits his passion for the Lions has only grown in the last two months.

“Everyone knows what I think about this concept, and I think that speaks for itself,” he said.

“I love everything about the Lions and have really enjoyed the last eight weeks.

“There are always ups and downs, but the inner circle is a truly special place.

“Think about it however you want, but I think four years is a significant period between drinks, right?”

The unusual third Test, which saw three players fail to win and James Ryan knocked out, was abandoned 37 minutes into the second half after the players left the field due to lightning in the area.

Australia then used the full 10 minutes allotted to warm up before the restart, while the Lions only needed five. Video from the Lions' dressing room during the break showed Finn Russell and Tom Curry using mobile phones.

“We agreed to have 10 minutes to warm up, but following the advice of our team, we decided to go out just five minutes before kick-off to be ready for the game,” Farrell said.

I hope I don't have to play games like that again. The guys there at one point had the feeling that they were freezing! I guess that's what you'd expect, given the Lions' schedule. We've seen that before, haven't we?

“We were trying to figure out the rules and what was going to happen. At one point it looked like the game was going to be 45 minutes, but then it was cut down to 30 minutes.
