Roman dragon makes history in Chester

With six of his previous eight wins coming on Rudy, this is likely to be a home affair for the six-year-old, with his owners including landlord Palmer and former England star Michael Owen.

Hugo Palmer's Roman Dragon made Chester history by holding on for a thrilling finish in the Queensferry Stakes to claim his seventh win at the track.

However, he has failed to impress the judge in his last three starts and was sent off at surprising odds of 16-1 in the five-furlong race by Jason Watson.

Invigorated by the ride, he was immediately sent to the front by his jockey and even though Ed Walker's favourite Celandine finished with a flourish to force a photo, Roman Dragon showed his tenacity when needed to secure his seventh Chester win by a narrow margin.

Palmer told Sky Sports Racing: “All credit goes to my team as I haven't seen the horse since he ran at Ascot last weekend as I was at Goodwood.”

“Jason has given him the perfect ride and, if you remember, when he left here after winning the May Stakes he was rated 97 and, excluding three runs in the straight at Ascot where he dropped to 94, I think we needed to find £9 to find the favourite, who is only three lengths behind six furlongs.
