Jess Phillips has noted that Britain has become “fat” thanks to women's free labour.
The UK's minister for women and girls has said the country has relied on women for charity for decades.
She stressed that this was a “fundamentally sexist” practice that made the government reluctant to offer such services.
She admitted she “hated” her job title and added that protecting against gender-based violence should be “a standard issue for every government department”.
Birmingham MP Yardley highlighted the problem in Whitehall as government departments treat violence against women and girls as a Home Office issue.
Ms Phillips said she had had to work to ensure the safety of women and girls was a “priority”, which she said had not always made her “popular with government ministers”.
Asked what resistance she had experienced from ministers or civil servants, she replied: “People would say things like, 'This is the job of the Interior Ministry.'
“Why is it my job to teach kids about healthy relationships in schools? Why is it my responsibility to provide psychological support, no matter what the reasons are for why you're in this [situation]?”
“Do you know what this means? This is the result of women's free labor.
“It comes from an inherently sexist approach because women didn’t have access to these services, and so a lot of women across the country came together and created these services and offered them to other women for free, without receiving any payment for their work.
“So they put a mattress down and set up a shelter. They set up counseling services, hired people who were trained as therapists, and volunteered their time, and they did it all for free.”
