Rashidat Adeleke will miss this weekend's National Athletics Championships in Santry as she “continues to focus on recovering from her recent racing.”
Last year, Adeleke set the last Irish sprint record she had not yet held, running 100 metres in 11.13 seconds.
Adeleke recently competed in the Oslo Diamond League, where she placed fourth in the 400m with a time of 50.42 seconds. She also competed in London, where she again placed fourth in the 200m.
For the 22-year-old, the record of 49.07 seconds she set in the European Championship final last year is still a long way off.
In a statement on social media, she said: “Unfortunately, I will not be able to compete in the national championships this weekend. I have been competing in this competition every year since 2021 and there is nothing better than performing in front of my audience.”
An injury early in the season has led to further lingering problems, so I will be supporting the team from afar. Hopefully next year I can come back and experience the magic of Morton. I am immensely grateful for all the support. Good luck to everyone involved.
Adeleke's focus will be on preparing for the World Championships in Tokyo in September.
There will be some big names in the running this weekend, with Charlene Maudsley, Sophie Becker and Phil Healy all competing in the 400m.
Sarah Healy is hoping to continue her successful year by competing in the 800m, while Kate O'Connor is also aiming for success in the javelin, shot put and long jump.
Sarah Lavigne will compete in the 100m and 200m hurdles, while Mark English will star in the 400m and 800m.
Both days of competition at the National Championships will be broadcast on the Athletics Ireland YouTube channel and live on RTÉ Two from 5pm to 7.30pm on Sunday.
A one-day ticket costs 15 euros, a special two-day ticket can be purchased for 25 euros, and children under 16 can enter for free.
