Train derailment in Germany caused by landslide

Investigators believe a landslide triggered by heavy rains likely caused the derailment of a regional train in southern Germany, killing three people and injuring 41 others.

More than 100 passengers were on board a Deutsche Bahn train when at least two carriages derailed in wooded areas near Riedlingen, about 98 miles west of Munich, on Sunday evening.

Police said on Monday that the dead included a 32-year-old train driver, a 36-year-old apprentice and a 70-year-old passenger.

Some of the 41 victims suffered serious injuries.

Police said rain in the area caused sewer systems to overflow, likely triggering a landslide where the train derailed.

Police noted that there was no evidence to indicate an external influence that could have caused the derailment.

Photos from the scene showed train carriages lying on their sides as rescuers attempted to climb to the top of the carriages.

“These photos shake us to the core,” Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz said Monday, offering his condolences to the victims' families.

He promised to provide full support in efforts to find out the causes of the incident.
