European Commission President Meets Scottish First Minister Ahead of Trump Visit

Scotland's First Minister John Swinney has met the European Commission president ahead of her meeting with Donald Trump.

Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Glasgow on Saturday ahead of a meeting with the US president at his Trump Turnberry resort to discuss maintaining trade relations.

However, she met Mr Swinney on Saturday evening to discuss Britain's relationship with the European Union and the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

Mr Swinney said: “It was a pleasure to welcome European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Scotland.

“During our conversation, I underlined Scotland’s continued support for the European Union leadership to ensure free and safe humanitarian aid is delivered to Gaza and to efforts to end the intolerable suffering.

“I also took the opportunity to reaffirm Scotland’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine and the country’s readiness to work with European partners on important issues, including energy.”

Ms von der Leyen announced her plans on Friday on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, writing: “Following a productive conversation with @Potus, we have agreed to meet on Sunday in Scotland to discuss the transatlantic trade relationship and how to strengthen it.”
