Lewis Hamilton to start Belgian Grand Prix from pit lane after powertrain change

Lewis Hamilton starts his race from the pit lane at today's Belgian Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion faced a difficult weekend at Spa-Francorchamps and had to settle for 16th on the grid after going out in Q1.

However, Hamilton's Ferrari team has confirmed he will start the race from the back of the field after a new power unit is fitted.

Hamilton described his results this weekend as “unacceptable” after he started 18th and finished only 15th in the sprint race earlier and then failed to make it into Q2 qualifying for Sunday's main event.

Hamilton's best lap was called off by stewards after he ran all four wheels of his Ferrari off the track at Raidillon.

“I don't agree (with the stewards' decision) but I'm leaving,” said the 40-year-old. “It was another mistake on my part and I need to sort myself out.”

“I have to apologise to my team as it is disappointing to be out of the race in both Q1s this weekend. It was a very, very poor performance.”

Hamilton has yet to reach the podium for Ferrari, the longest he has gone a season without finishing in the top three.
