Luke Littler reached the semi-finals of the Betfred World Matchplay against Josh Rock after beating Andrew Gilding 16-14 at the Winter Gardens.

The world champion was not far behind but had to average 103.91 and score 18 maximum points to get past Gilding, who was knocked out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage for the second year in a row.

Littler led in the first three sessions and briefly extended his lead to five legs, but Gilding managed to check out at 72 on the bull to end a run of 160 points in three consecutive legs.

Luke Littler hailed Andrew Gilding's impressive 160-degree strike as Goldfinger looked to be closing in on the Nuclear Division lead.

The world number two set a new record for most 180 attempts in a World Matchplay quarter-final on her way to holding the throw in the next round, then responded to 81 and 127 attempts from Gilding to complete a dramatic 11-darter victory.

Littler now faces a semi-final meeting with good friend Josh Rock, who averaged 104.02 in his 16-11 win over Gerwyn Price, who was the first 170 in the tournament and finished with an impressive 164 in his final match.

How Littler beat Gilding to secure semi-final spot

Littler came under pressure from Gilding in the early exchanges and the first seven legs were won on serve before 'Nuke' broke 90 with an 11-dart break to win the next to extend his lead to three legs.

Gilding took the tenth leg despite Littler opening with six perfect darts and took advantage of the world champion's shaky finish to break in the next leg, but Littler responded by winning the next two legs.
