Joe Root scored an impressive 150 to not only make him the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket of all time, but also to give England a dominant lead in the fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford. The hosts finished day three on 544-7, 186 runs ahead of India.
Having started the day in 11th place, unbeaten and fifth in the top scorers' list, Root overtook Rahul Dravid on 30 and then Jacques Kallis on 31 shortly after, leaving Ricky Ponting in the crosshairs with 120 required.
The former England captain comfortably reached his 38th Test hundred, sharing fourth place with Kumar Sangakkara, before moving past Ponting as England extended their lead significantly, with Ollie Pope (71) and Ben Stokes (77 nil) also contributing.

Stokes' play was interrupted for around an hour as he went off with cramp in the 66th minute, but he returned for the fall of England's seventh wicket as Root, the dangerous Jamie Smith (9) and Chris Woakes (4) left the field in quick succession in the evening session.
