Thomas Tuchel admires Jude Bellingham's “fire” but the England manager has openly admitted his mother finds some of the midfielder's on-field behaviour “repulsive”.
The star made an impressive move from Birmingham to Real Madrid via Borussia Dortmund at the age of 21, but has also been the subject of speculation over his temperament.
Bellingham was left unhappy with the referees on Tuesday after his equaliser against Senegal was disallowed following a controversial VAR intervention involving Levi Colville's handball.
The midfielder punched a water cooler after the 3-1 defeat, and Tuchel made some unusual comments about him in an interview with talkSPORT the following day.
When asked about the view among some fans that England would be better off without Bellingham, the manager replied: “I find that difficult to understand.
“I think it should be the other way around – how can we create the best version of it and get the best reception so that people realise what it brings to us and so that it adds a certain spice.
“However, I understand that this can cause mixed emotions. I see it in my parents, especially my mother, who sometimes cannot recognize the sweet, educated and well-mannered young man that I see.
“When he smiles, he conquers everyone. But sometimes you can see his rage, his hunger, his passion, and it comes out in a way that can be a little off-putting, like for my mother when she sits in front of the TV.
