Teen Jay Slater Dies of Head Injury, Investigators Say

Teenager Jay Slater, who disappeared in Tenerife last summer and became the subject of a massive manhunt, died from head injuries, a coroner's court has heard.

Mr Slater, 19, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was on holiday on the Spanish island and attended the NRG music festival at Papagayo nightclub in Playa de las Americas with friends on June 16 last year.

It is believed that early the following morning, Monday, he went to visit other people he had met while on holiday and then disappeared, having been reported missing on June 18.

His remains were found in a remote area by a mountain rescue team of the Spanish Civil Guard near the village of Masca on July 15, 2024.

His mother Debbie Duncan, stepfather and other family members attended the inquest into Mr Slater's death at Preston Coroner's Court on Wednesday.

Home Office pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd gave a detailed account of the injuries found on Mr Slater during the post-mortem examination.

Mr Shepherd noted that in addition to lacerations and cuts to the left side of the head, the main findings involved head and pelvic injuries.

He added: “There were significant fractures to the left side of the head. Several extensive fractures going all the way to the base of the skull.

“There were also fractures on the left side of the pelvis and hip joints.

“The nature of the injuries is entirely consistent with a serious fall from a height, landing on the head.”

Dr James Adeley, senior coroner for Lancashire and Blackburn at Darwen, asked the witness whether there were any signs of assault or of the teenager being restrained from moving.
