Gawkowski: Musk or Zuckerberg will not be our digital masters

When I look at how much digital giants earn, I get the impression that their appetites are insatiable. They want to eat not only the data that powers their advertising engines, but the entire citizen, in order to control him – assessed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski in Monday's “Gazeta Wyborcza”.

In the interview with “GW”, the Deputy Prime Minister was asked, among other things, about DSA, i.e. the EU law on digital services, enabling control over big tech.

“This week we will take an important step towards implementing DSA in Poland. The Council of Ministers is to appoint a coordinator for digital services. In the next step, we will adopt a draft act implementing DSA (…). We prefer to pass this law calmly, after the elections, so that no one has even a shadow of a doubt that we want to influence democratic elections in any way,” said Gawkowski.

“When I look at how much digital giants earn, I get the impression that their appetites are insatiable. They would like to eat not only the data that powers their advertising engines, but the entire citizen, to control him. This is digital colonialism, which we cannot agree to, ” said Gawkowski.

“Turning a blind eye to the fact that Bezos, Musk or Zuckerberg have the right to be our digital master ended when societies decided that owning slaves is wrong . Digital slaves can also exist, and the task of the Ministry of Digital Affairs is to speak out about it. We must explain what modern digitalization means to citizens, including their social status,” he noted.

The Minister of Digital Affairs was also asked about actions aimed at limiting disinformation from Russia in the context of the elections.

“According to our information, Russian services have been planning and continue to plan a series of disinformation activities, cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, campaigns aimed at destabilizing social sentiment in Poland. There is still some time left until the end of the elections. I place particular emphasis here on the second round of voting. It will be strictly polarizing. And the elections will end when there is a resolution of the Supreme Court,” he said.

He added that the Electoral Umbrella program was created to help with false information through cooperation with social media platforms. (PAP)
