India and Pakistan have traded accusations of violating a ceasefire agreement just hours after it was signed in talks aimed at resolving the worst military conflict between nuclear powers in decades.
The truce was expected to quickly end weeks of escalating clashes, including rocket and drone strikes, sparked by a mass shooting of tourists last month that Pakistan blames on India and denies.
However, shortly after the countries reached the agreement, multiple explosions rocked two major cities in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Indian Foreign Minister Vikram Misri said on Saturday evening that “there have been multiple violations of the agreement reached between the two countries,” accusing Pakistan of violating the terms.
“We call on Pakistan to take necessary measures to prevent these violations and to approach this situation with full seriousness and responsibility,” he said at a press conference in New Delhi.
Mr Misri added that Indian military forces were “taking retaliatory action” in response to what he called “border incursions”.
In Islamabad, Pakistan's Foreign Office blamed Indian forces for violating the ceasefire. It stressed that Pakistan remains committed to the agreement and that its military is acting responsibly and with restraint in the circumstances.
“We believe that any issues related to the uninterrupted observance of the ceasefire regime should be resolved through communication at the appropriate levels,” the ministry said.
