India accuses Pakistan of violating ceasefire after agreement reached hours earlier

India accused Pakistan of violating a recently reached ceasefire agreement that was signed just hours earlier on Saturday after US-led talks aimed at resolving the worst military conflict between the two nuclear powers in decades.

Indian Foreign Minister Vikram Misri said on Saturday that “numerous violations of the terms agreed between the two countries” on the ceasefire had taken place, accusing Pakistan of not abiding by the agreement.

At a press conference in New Delhi, he said: “We urge Pakistan to take necessary steps to address these violations and to approach the situation with due seriousness and responsibility.”

Mr Misri said the Indian army was “taking retaliatory action” against what he described as “border incursions”.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry accused Indian forces of violating the ceasefire.

An official statement said Pakistan remained committed to the ceasefire agreement and its forces were acting responsibly and with restraint.

“We are confident that any issues related to the smooth implementation of the ceasefire regime should be resolved through communication at the appropriate levels,” the ministry noted.

“The military on the ground must also exercise restraint.”

Earlier, multiple blasts rocked two cities in Indian-controlled Kashmir just hours after India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire, the result of a US-led diplomatic effort to resolve the worst military standoff in decades.

Power outages followed loud blasts in Srinagar and Jammu, locals said.

Omar Abdullah, a senior politician in the region, wrote on social media: “What the hell happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard all over Srinagar!!!”
