Eleven teachers killed in dump truck-minibus collision in Indonesia

Eleven people, all primary school teachers, were killed when a dump truck collided with a minibus in Central Java, Indonesia, officials said.

A truck loaded with construction materials collided with a minibus on a downhill slope before crashing into a house in Kalijambe village in Purworejo district.

A statement from the local disaster management agency said the minibus was carrying a group of teachers from Magelang district who were heading to a funeral in Purworejo district.

“The truck apparently lost control and crashed into the minibus,” Purworejo Police Chief Andry Agustiano said.

He added that the police immediately began an investigation.

Several ambulances transported the bodies and other victims, including the truck driver and the homeowner, to a nearby hospital.

Road accidents are common in Indonesia due to low safety standards and poor infrastructure.

A bus carrying 34 passengers lost control and overturned in West Sumatra province on Tuesday, killing at least 12 people.

Last year, a bus carrying 61 students and teachers returning from a field trip to a high school in Depok, near Jakarta, collided with cars and motorcycles after brake failure, killing 11 students and injuring many others.
