Arne Slot returns compliment to Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool title win

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has mentioned his predecessor Jurgen Klopp's name after he led the Reds to a record 20th top-flight title on Sunday.

Sloth's side clinched the Premier League title with four games to go, thrashing Tottenham 5-1 on a sunny day at Anfield.

The Dutchman struggled after replacing the hugely popular and successful Klopp last summer but has proved his doubters wrong with a highly impressive debut campaign.

One of Klopp's final acts as Liverpool manager was to utter Sloth's name during his emotional farewell to Anfield, and his successor saw fit to reciprocate in a speech to the fans.

Asked about the reason for the gesture, Slot replied: “Because of what he did before I came here – I don't think any manager has ever done anything like that.”

“It certainly had an impact on me, but beyond that, he helped me even more because of the team he left behind and the culture he brought to that team.”

Liverpool were given a rousing reception by the fans before the match and Slot felt it inspired the team.

He said: “We had to do it anyway, but I think everyone on that bus felt that if the fans were with us, we couldn't lose that football match.”

“It's something special. To be a part of this day is something truly unique, and to do it in front of our fans is special for everyone.”

The celebrations continued outside Anfield after the final whistle, with thousands of people outside singing, waving red flags and setting off fireworks.

Liverpool, who have suffered just two defeats in the league this season, have been top of the table since November.

Slot said: “I think we've believed in that for quite a long time, but we realise how difficult it is to win a football game in this league.

“You also have to maintain consistency, which is difficult – but we had it. When you have the kind of lead we had, I think it's safe to say that
