Xander Schauffele says Rory McIlroy free of Grand Slam pressure is 'scary' prospect

Open champion Xander Schauffele has said Rory McIlroy's ability to play without the pressure of chasing a Grand Slam title is a “scary” prospect for his rivals.

Schauffele said he wouldn't be surprised to see the world number two “win” a few more major titles after his impressive victory at the Augusta National Masters.

The 31-year-old Olympic champion, who won both the USPGA and Open Championships last year, has made it clear he is also aiming to win all four Grand Slam titles.

“It was predicted a long time ago and I think every golfer should strive for it,” he said.

“There's a reason why only six of them [male golfers] have done it. But until last year it seemed impossible, almost unachievable.

“After a year like last year, it definitely allows a young professional like me to dream a little bigger.

“That's something I'm really looking forward to – challenging myself and achieving that in my career. It's going to be really exciting to try and achieve that.”

Schauffele recently returned to competition after a two-month layoff due to a rib injury. He tied for eighth at the Masters and is feeling confident heading into the rest of the season.

He described McIlroy's victory at the tournament as “an incredible event for the world of golf.”

“Anything that can bring attention to our sport is a positive thing, and his triumph at the Masters, which demonstrates the talent of a generation, is certainly an outstanding achievement,” the American said.

“Again, it can be scary for players like us. If something was holding him back and now he feels free, it can be quite scary.”

When asked if McIlroy could now add to his five major wins, Schauffele replied: “Yeah, I don't see any reason why it can't happen. He has all the tools when I watch him play and what he can do.”

Schauffele added: “Will I be surprised if he starts winning? No. Will I be there to try to stop him? Definitely.”

The Californian, who won the Bordeaux Jug at Royal Troon last year, spoke to reporters via video link at the 153rd Open Championship event at Royal Portrush in County Antrim.
